Arabic root · met on p 10
ح د ثcoming to be; telling
حديث · ḥadīth · a saying, a report
- Met in: V1 p10 ¶3f: «ما أفاد المسلم أخاه فائدة أفضل من حديث حسن بلغه فبلغه», "a Muslim gives his brother no benefit better than a good saying that reached him and that he passed on".
- Dictionary form: حَدِيث. Lane gives two senses: "New, recent; … contr. of qadiymN", and "Also i. q. xabarN [Information; a piece of information; … news, or tidings; … a narration, or narrative; a story; &c.]".
- Pattern: فَعِيل (faʿīl). From the same root, تُحَدِّثُ, "it will tell" (3 times in the Quran).
- Meaning here: A saying, something told and passed on: «حديث حسن», "a good saying". The same word names the reports of the Prophet ﷺ that al-ʿIrāqī traces in every note.
Ibn Faris, Maqāyīs al-Lugha, root حدث, vol 2, p 35
One origin: a thing coming to be that was not. One says: a matter came to be (ḥadatha) after it was not. He goes on: «والحديث من هذا ; لأنه كلام يحدث منه الشيء بعد الشيء», "and ḥadīth is from this, because it is speech from which one thing comes after another".
Urdu bridge
حدیث (a hadith) is Urdu, and so are محدث (a scholar of hadith) and حادثہ (an accident: something that suddenly comes to be). (to be confirmed)

Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide.
Surah Az-Zumar (39), ayah 23 · Saheeh International
Why this ayah: «أَحْسَنَ ٱلْحَدِيثِ», "the best statement": ḥadīth with ḥasan, the same pair as «حديث حسن» on V1 p10 ¶3f.
