Arabic root · met on p 9
ج ن نcovering
الجنة · al-janna · Paradise; a garden
- Met in: V1 p9 ¶1f: «فبينه وبين الأنبياء في الجنة درجة واحدة», "between him and the prophets in Paradise there is a single degree". Already a key term on V1 p8 ¶4a.
- Dictionary form: جَنَّة. Lane: "A [garden, such as is called] busotaAn … or any bstAn having trees by which the ground is concealed"; "then, with the article Al, [Paradise,] the abode of recompense".
- Pattern: فَعْلَة (faʿla), from the root of covering: Lane says it is "as though it were originally the inf. n. of un. of jan~ahu, and meaning 'a single act of veiling' or 'concealing'". The plural is جَنَّات, the Quran's "gardens" (2:25).
- Meaning here: Paradise, where the one who dies seeking knowledge to bring Islam to life stands one rank below the prophets.
Ibn Faris, Maqāyīs al-Lugha, root جنن, vol 1, p 421
الجيم والنون أصل واحد، وهو [الستر و] التستر. فالجنة ما يصير إليه المسلمون في الآخرة، وهو ثواب مستور عنهم اليوم
One origin: covering and being covered. So al-janna is where the Muslims go in the Hereafter: a reward covered from them today. He goes on: a garden is called janna too, "because the trees cover with their leaves".
